Zoanthids are often referred to as Sea Mats and Button Polyps. They grow in colonies with multiple individual polyps attached to one piece of rock. Zoanthids have the ability to sting other polyps or corals. The stings are not strong, but they are considered semi-aggressive because they need plenty of room between their colony and other corals since they tend to crowd them out.
Zoanthids require moderate light with moderate water movement in the aquarium. They require the addition of iodine and other trace elements in the aquarium for continued good health. Zoanthids reproduce easily in the aquarium by splitting off a portion of their base or mouth, which increases the size of the colony. Symbiotic zooxanthellae provide almost all of their nutrition. If the lighting is not optimal, they should be fed micro-plankton or baby brine shrimp.
