An aquarium with plenty of plants, rocks, and driftwood is recommended for hiding places. Chinese Algae Eaters can tolerate different water conditions but water quality should remain constant to avoid stress. If it is in a smaller community aquarium, it will defend its territory. This species of algae eater will become aggressive when mature.
A Chinese Algae Eater’s main food source is algae on the plants, rocks, and driftwood in the aquarium. Algae based wafers should be used to supplement their diet if not enough algae present.
